Post-Abatement Clearance Testing: What Actually Happens

Clearance testing is the independent check that proves an abatement worked. Here is how it goes step by step.

Key takeaways

  • Clearance must be performed by an independent third party — not the abatement contractor.
  • It combines visual inspection with aggressive air sampling.
  • TEM analysis is the standard method for final clearance.

Step 1: Visual inspection

Our inspector walks the containment while it is still up, checking for any residual debris, dust, or damaged surfaces. Nothing is sampled until the visual passes.

Step 2: Aggressive air sampling

A leaf blower is used inside the containment to stir up any settled dust, and calibrated pumps draw air across filter cassettes for the required sampling period.

Step 3: TEM analysis and report

Cassettes are shipped to an NVLAP-accredited lab for TEM analysis. If fiber counts fall below the clearance threshold, we issue a signed pass letter. If not, the contractor re-cleans and we re-sample.

"Honest people. They told us we probably didn't need to remove our floor tile if we weren't disturbing it — that saved us $8k. We used them for the clearance later."
